March of Dimes Youth Times
   E-mail Newsletter: Fall 2005
From the Chair...

With changing colors and cooler weather comes fall. Fall brings one of the most important mission awareness days for the March of Dimes - Prematurity Awareness Day!

On Tuesday, November 15th, thousands of March of Dimes volunteers and staff members participated in local and national activities to raise awareness of the increasing problem of premature birth. Youth play a vital role in the success of Prematurity Awareness Day, and in the Prematurity Awareness Campaign that takes place throughout the year. By conducting awareness activities in your schools and communities, YOU are making a difference in the lives of moms and babies across the United States.

You can raise awareness about the problem of prematurity at any time of year; not just in November. Wondering where to go for Prematurity Awareness ideas? Visit the new Team Youth Web site at http://www.marchofdimes.com/youth/ and click on "Activities." Finally, don't forget to tell us about your activities! E-mail me at erinmod@hotmail.com with your success stories!

Happy planning!

Feature Story
What will YOU do
for Pink & Bluesm?

The Basics

Premature birth is the number one killer of newborns and a major cause of serious health problems. It costs society billions of dollars each year. Half a million babies are born prematurely every year, and the number is rising. That is why the March of Dimes has designated November as Prematurity Awareness Month and November 15th as Prematurity Awareness Day -- to let us know that babies are in crisis and to bring people together to help give all babies their nine months.

So what can YOU do? The idea is to engage in activities to help celebrate the advances in prematurity research, educate local communities about the prematurity crisis and advocate for a national force of volunteers committed to helping save the lives of so many vulnerable babies. And you can do this anytime of year, not just in November.

The Possibilities
Now that you are familiar with the basics of the Prematurity Awareness Campaign, the question to ask is, "What can you do for pink & blue to help prevent premature birth?" A good place to start is on the Team Youth Web site under "Activities." You should also be sure to check out the Prematurity Awareness Day site.

The possibilities for your activities are virtually limitless, and the suggestions below are just the tip of the iceberg:

Ribbon Lapel Pins: Make the fashion statement that saves babies by wearing our pink & blue ribbon lapel pins! Order your lapel pins

Letter to the Editor: A letter to the editor of your local newspaper is an easy and effective way to tell your community that premature birth is a serious problem that needs their attention. For ideas and templates of sample letters visit the Team Youth Web site and click on "Activities."

Big Changes with Small Change: Help support March of Dimes research and ensure that all babies get their 9 months simply by collecting your coins and depositing them at Coinstar coin-counting machines located at your nearby grocery store.

Pink & Blue on Buildings and Landmarks: What do pink and blue lights say about your city or school? They say, "We care!" Light your skylines pink & blue as a symbolic gesture of hope for premature babies, to create a dramatic effect that raises community awareness and generates media coverage. From bridges to balconies and landmarks to lobbies, light the town pink & blue to show you care. Don't forget your school buildings, statues, stadium or mascot.

Banding Together: Join the March of Dimes in its commitment to fight prematurity by creating a virtual band in honor or in memory of a child you know who was born prematurely or for any child who is special to you.

Pink & Blue Jeans for Babies: A successful March of Dimes fund-raiser, Pink & Blue Jeans for Babies is conducted independently in corporations, schools, and clubs and organizations nationwide to raise prematurity awareness. Wear pink & blue jeans for a day (or week!) at school and show your support by simply purchasing a sticker, button or T-shirt to benefit the March of Dimes.

Pink & Blue-minaria: Decorate your home, neighborhood or school with pink & blue luminary bags. The pink & blue paper bags stamped with the March of Dimes logo are a wonderful way to spread awareness with a glowing impact. Download the order form and order your bags today.

National Brief

Awareness Through Advocacy
by Charles Bentley

From fund-raising campaigns to pink & blue lightings to literature on preterm labor, there are so many ways to spread prematurity awareness in your local area. But don't just limit yourself to promoting awareness in your schools and neighborhoods. By employing several effective advocacy techniques, you can march your efforts straight from your school to the United States Capitol.

Informing the U.S. Congress about the devastating effects that prematurity has on families is an integral component of the Prematurity Campaign. There is a bill pending before Congress that will help us reach this goal, which you can advance. The "PREEMIE Act" (S.707/H.R.2681) would expand research, education and health services related to preterm birth.

Take a few minutes to tell your senators and representatives why it's important to be concerned about the growing rates of preterm birth. Explain your interest in prematurity and urge your elected officials to add their names as co-sponsors of the PREEMIE Act and work for swift enactment of this bill.

Three options for contacting your senators and representatives:

  • E-mail or fax a letter.
Need help? Download a sample letter.

  • Call the office of your senators and representatives.

  • Meet with senators and representatives in your state. Call ahead to schedule an appointment.

Contact information for your senators and representative can be found at:

U.S. Senate Website

U.S. House of Representatives Website

Do the Math: Premature Birth is Taking a Toll

Most people don't realize what a serious and widespread problem premature birth (before 37 weeks of pregnancy) is. Besides being the leading cause of newborn death (within the first month of life), it can lead to serious lifelong health problems like mental retardation, blindness, chronic lung disease and cerebral palsy. So what toll is prematurity having on babies today? Do the math:

Half a million babies are born prematurely each year.

That's 1,367 babies each and every day.

Thirteen babies die every day as a result of prematurity/low birthweight

One in 8 babies in the United States is born prematurely

Premature birth is affecting babies in communities like yours all across the country. And in half the cases we don't know why. The sooner we find answers, the better for our babies.

The John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Contest

Promoting the involvement of young people in the civic life of their country is one of President Kennedy's most important legacies and the mission of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation.

High school students are invited to participate in the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest by writing a compelling essay on the meaning of political courage. They're urged to learn about and be inspired by America's elected officials, past or present, who have tried to make a difference in the world.

The winning essayists receive awards totaling $6,500. Essays will be accepted beginning September 1, 2005, and the deadline for the contest is January 7, 2006.
